A Unified RX Interface

Learn more about the new RX Beta UI created to streamline the creation and management of reservations.

Written by Kristin Hunt

A new UI is coming soon! Try the Beta UI and help us improve the new streamlined reservation creation and management UI. By integrating all the data into a single unified interface, you'll no longer need to bounce between the Overview, Clusters, and Deployment Planning tabs to find the information used most. This new UI will roll out as a beta, giving our users an opportunity to try it while we gather feedback and make additional enhancements before going live in our production environment. Take a moment to learn a little more about how we are redesigning the RX Reservation Management System.

We've created a way to enable new features for beta testing. Based on permissions, you'll see the features you can enable for beta testing under User Settings. This Beta UI can be enabled with a toggle. There will also be a quick link to flip back and forth between the current and new interface.

Beta UI Features

Our goal was to provide a single, central location for the information you use most when creating and managing a reservation. On a single tab, you can now add equipment, create workloads, assign them to clusters, launch the cluster when deployment is complete, and perform any post-deployment functions.

Navigation

You'll notice that after creating a reservation, you're in a window where you can add both clusters and workloads, and it doesn't matter which you add first.

There is a sidebar with icons that let you display everything on one pane, only clusters not assigned, and workload information. Both Cluster and Workload sections have purple + buttons to add.

If you wish to view more about a cluster or workload, click the object to update the information displayed in the main pane. For example, in the image above, the pane displays the workload and its assigned cluster information.

What's New with Clusters

Cluster Details are Accessed Differently

Using the plus button is the same; select clusters as you normally do. Clusters will be shown in the Unassigned Cluster section until you assign them to a workload; after that, you must access the cluster object within the assigned workload to view its details. Clicking each cluster displays its details and actions, including node information, the ability to launch PE and PC once deployed, and rescheduling.

You may also display the hardware details of a cluster by clicking the information icon next to the cluster name.

Assigning to a Workload is Different

The streamlined method will require you to use a drop-down menu to select a workload you've added to the reservation. Currently, the ability to drag and drop to a workload is not available. After adding both the cluster and the workload, the Assign to Workload button on each cluster lets you select the Workload name.

What's New with Workloads

Use the plus icon to create a custom workload or select a runbook as you normally would. Once created, Workloads will appear in a list under the unassigned clusters section.

Here you'll notice the components of the deployment across the top. Action menus are also available for redeploying, downloading configuration files, requesting extensions, or rescheduling clusters.

But notice you can just click on a Start or End Date to reschedule it if needed.

Status Indicators are Different

Workload objects will be color-coded to quickly show their status. For example, below is a workload for the NAI runbook that is not assigned to a cluster and has no color. The custom NDB workload with two clusters, one of which is currently being deployed, is orange. The other cluster has a future start date and will remain color-coded blue (scheduled) until the workload begins deployment. And of course, a successful deployment will be color-coded green, and a failure will be red.

And once the clusters are assigned to a workload, their status indicators will also be color-coded.

Finding Deployment Logs

Here, you can click between the workload and cluster objects to display the functions and details of each. Clicking on the cluster, you'll find:

  • A color-coded timeline indicating the deployment process

  • A link to Open Logs during each stage of deployment

  • Under the Launch button and hamburger menu:

    • Launch provides the ability to

      • Copy Data Services IP

      • Launch PE and PC if available, and once deployment completes

    • The hamburger menu provides the ability to

      • Reschedule your cluster

      • Download the Config file

      • Delete the cluster from the Workload

  • All node IPs and details

The Location of Reservation Action Buttons is Different

We've also reduced the number of buttons across the top of your reservation. Reservation actions, such as getting help with extension requests and NAI API keys, as well as the Activity Log, are available under the button next to the Share option.

As development continues, we would love to hear your feedback on the initial iteration of our new streamlined UI. Use the Get Help option to enter a Bug, Feature Request, or Comment! We look forward to hearing all the submissions!
